Has the Church Strayed from Ancient Truth and Embraced a Morality which Denies Religion? It isn't abortion, nor is it adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality or birth control. Ancient figures in history warned of the scourge that resuls in more victims and greater injustices than did racial segregation. Not that long ago, some citizens had to sit at the back of the bus, and nobody thought much about it. Injustices are that way, not recognized as wrongs by the proponents until after they're stopped. The advent of modern birth control must have seemed completely normal at the time. Hindus refer to it as lost in activity. To Christians it's known as fornication or pleasures of the flesh. Saint Augustine of Hippo, a cornerstone of early Christian morality, described it as the original sin. It is why babies -- all babies -- are "conceived in sin" and born imperfect, detached, out of harmony with, and in fear of the world they have entered. The log in your own eyeIt is not abortion, nor is it adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality or birth control. They are normal and natural resultants of a citizenry finding pleasures in the conception of a life, but having no wanting or need for the bother of one. Protestant proponents of it look to relatively obscure biblical passage for justification, while a Catholic faith welcomes the fathering of a newborn with a roll of the dice, in hope that the blessed day will arrive a little later than sooner.
The Corinthians passage gives an imperfect flock a means to populate the earth without producing children that will be cursed at birth by parents who hadn't any desire for them, and unmistakably says that the initiating of a new life is pleasurable and joyful, not sinful and immoral. This was no secret to disciples of Saint Augustine. His explanation of it requires that child, not pleasures, be foremost in thought, for otherwise a husband will demean his wife to that of a prostitute, and resentment, not rejoicing may result with a child's birth. No biblical phrase nor credible historical religion gives instruction on family planning or legitimizes a coming together with a hope and prayer of preventing a child from being conceived and born. A new moralityChurch believers have seen in it the lofty religious value of unity and love, and this has relieved it of a requirement for biblical justification. With a foremost desire for child not in the equation, Augustine's message is relegated to ancient history, and religious morality has been redefined. The new morality, asking for no more than rhythm and rudimentary technology, affords a simple, easy and pleasurable way for displaying love and achieving unity with another, but with it come new questions and controversial societal problems. What quality will stop two of the same sex from a show of love and a seeking of unity? For what purpose should two youngsters in love wait until legal papers are signed and church blessings given? Should a good spouse and parent be loving to only his mate? Why should a responsible citizen abstain from a striving for love and unity, for these are the highest qualities of religion.` With child placed secondary or entirely omitted, the new morality is paramount and the old morality discarded. Disciples of the new morality often are aghast at why the old religions so strictly condemned a borrowing of the birth process for strictly pleasurable uses, but they must recognize and reconcile their belief with the new faith's god given byproducts; abortion, incest, adultery, unwanted babies, and sexually confused children. Responsible societal adults must weigh the new morals against the costs and damage done to society and the many unwanted or conceived but not born babies, and perhaps to their own spiritual health.
