Former NATO Allies go to Trial in KosovoNov 8, 2002 Five former guerrillas of the Kosova Liberation Army (KLA) went on trial Nov 8, 2002 for abducting, beating, and presumably murdering fellow Albanians of a rival group, reported Reuters. Ahmet Elshani and Ramush Ahmetaj, two of the accused, detained them in the town of Pek, took them to local KLA headquarters, and beat them, read the indictment. They were then led away and were never again seen, Their arrest last August sparked a protest, bringing UN peacekeepers to fire teargas and disperse stone-throwing Kosovo Albanians, injuring 11 international police and many protesters. US President Bill Clinton had blamed Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic for "all of the violence" in Kosovo, and had used that as an excuse for going to war with and occupying Serbia. Tens of thousands of Kosovo Albanians were displaced in the first few days of the NATO war. Milosevic is currently on trial in the Hague, largely for failing to control Serbian troops at the start of the allied bombing campaign. -States' Liberty Party |
