Schwarzenegger Apology Not Unlike Clinton's

Gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger took a page from the Clinton play-book when he gave his apology for sexually harassing women.

Arnold the Clinton Barbarian

British TV host Anna Richardson told the Sun: "I wanted to say, 'You dirty bastard'. But you can't tell a powerful man like him to f*** off... He kept saying how fantastic I looked and staring at my [breasts]." At the end of the interview, claims Richardson, "He pulled me onto his knee, saying 'I really want to know if your breasts are real'"

Reports of womanizing in the British, but avoided by U.S. press have given Arnold Schwarzenegger's candidacy for Governor an ironic similarity to Bill Clinton's 1992 run for president, and Republicans have perhaps found their dream candidate for going toe-to-toe with Clinton.  Schwarzenegger, labeling himself a "peoples' candidate" has managed to connect up with the wealthy and influential and keep under wraps a lifelong history of unflattering rumors, transforming the lot into a yawn bringing "30 year old" story reminiscent of Clinton's "10 year old land deal".

Like Clinton, Schwarzenegger's past hints at a dream of developing power, not a more lofty found prominence from a lifetime of working toward useful goals.  The British Guardian this year in an article titled "The Governator" reported  that Schwarzenegger's unauthorized biographer Wendy Leigh believes he set his sights at an early age to enter politics, quoting him saying "I wanted to be part of the small percentage of people who were leaders, not the large mass of followers. I think it is because I saw leaders use 100% of their potential... I was always fascinated by people in control of other people", and in a Playboy article he said "You have to create a need for yourself, build yourself up. While their empire goes on, slowly, without realizing it, build your own little fortress. And all of a sudden it's too late for them to do anything about it."

An article by Leigh titled "The Groping Governor" appeared last month in the London Evening Standard arnold schwarzenegger gropes woman 1documenting some of Schwarzenegger's marital infidelities, such as his year 2000 on-camera grouping of  British talk show host Denise Van Outen on the channel 4 program "Big Breakfast", viewed by millions of Brits.  Van Outen, who interviews her subjects on a bed, was apparently surprised, butarnold schwarzenegger gropes woman 3 not adverse to Schwarzenegger's antics, but "Big Screen" talk host Anna Richardson was not so congenial.  Upon being repeatedly fondled by the Schwarzenegger without cameras running, later told the Star "I wanted to say, 'You dirty bastard'. But you can't tell a powerful man like him to f*** off... He kept saying how fantastic I looked and staring at my [breasts]." At the end of the interview, claims Richardson, "He pulled me onto his knee, saying 'I really want to know if your breasts are real'". She says she stood up then and told him "You’re making me nervous." But Schwarzenegger told her to relax and pulled her back on his knee, finally he let her up, and "patted my bum as I went off."  She "left the room quite shaken", according to Premiere Magazine, and said. “What was more upsetting was that his people rushed to protect him and scapegoated me, and not one person came to apologize afterward.”

Talk host Melanie Sykes was groped by Schwarzenegger during the same year 2000 tour of Britain during taping of her show.  The National Enquirer printed at the time in "Arnie's Wife Hits Roof Over Grab-Happy Hubby" that she said she pushed him away and complained, "Get your hands off me!", but moments later he was on her again.  She said Schwarzenegger told her: "You don't get the big money for nothing" before pulling her closer.  The incident was caught on camera but the footage was never released.

The Guardian's December 15, 2000 article "Arnie denies getting too touchy-feely" tells of the predator's unwelcome advances on the  British female media hosts, earning him the label "octopus" by the British media, and the story even caught the ear of Newsmax, in a 2001 article about the Bush twins, titled "No Zone of Privacy."  It read "Ironically, as the so-called mainstream media have lowered themselves, the National Enquirer and the Star have actually broken more legitimate news stories than anyone else. In the OJ case, the Jesse Jackson love child case, the Arnold Schwarzenegger groping case and many others recently, it is this 'tabloid' paper that has scooped the New York Times and the Washington Post."

Schwarzenegger's spokesperson denied the charges then, and Schwarzenegger continues to now, and a new London Independent, Oct 5, 2003 reports that Richardson, the "TV Presenter Groped by Schwarzenegger May Sue" over smear reprisals made by the actor turned politicians campaign aides in the Los Angeles times.

Expecting a truthful response from the film star may be futile, when factoring in his known disdain for the Republican impeachment of Bill Clinton for "lying about sex".  Schwarzenegger on record as having said  he was then "ashamed to be a Republican", has effectively said that a government official should not be penalized for lying, even under oath about sexual related activities.

Rumors abound of Schwarzenegger's affairs, sexual encounters, and on-set harassing of others in the casting, such as his groping film star Linda Hamilton's breasts in the presence of her then-boyfriend and Terminator producer James Cameron.   Premiere tells of Schwarzenegger's constant fondling of female actresses on film sets, quoting an unnamed former Schwarzenegger producer saying “You don’t get it, that’s the way Arnold always behaves. For some reason, [speaking of Richardson and other British talk hosts] the studio or the publicists couldn’t put enough pressure on the women to kill the story.”  Perhaps the live on-camera assault may have given additional legs to these incidents.

The British Guardian This week, in an article titled "Judgment Day (Part Two)" told of the Terminator's intense liaisons with Sue Moray, Brigitte Nielsen, Rachel Ticotin and Gigi Goyette, just one name shy of the 5 women former Clinton aide Larry Nichols had given in a lawsuit against the then governor.

Brigitte Nielson starred in the 1984 movie "Red Sonja," which included Schwarzenegger in the cast.  Rachel Ticotin co-starred with Schwarzenegger in "Total Recall", and, according to Premier, they together had an open affair.  Fox News story "Arnold's Ex-Gal Pal: Recent or Not?" tells of Gigi Goyette's long relationship that started with the movie star turned politician when she was just 16 years old, lasting until just recently.  .The National Enquirer ran a story on her on April 26, 2001 called "Arnold's Mistress", and credits that it with bringing Schwarzenegger to back out of the 2002 race for Governor.

In this year's July 2003 issue of Esquire Magazine Schwarzenegger was asked if people were surprised that a bodybuilder would have an ability at intelligent discourse, and the movie star replied "As much as when you see a blonde with great t##s and a great a#s, you say to yourself, 'Hey, she must be stupid or must have nothing else to offer', which maybe is the case many times.  But then again there is the one that is as smart as her breasts look, great as her face looks, beautiful as her whole body looks gorgeous, you know, so people are shocked."

A breaking Los Angeles Times article late in the Recall campaign for governor and after the first writing of this article, titled "Women say Arnold groped, humiliated them" outlines six women who say they were sexually harassed by Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger, similarly to Clinton, has throughout his past shown no remorse about even his most brash encounters, unwaveringly insisting that he is a good family man and faithful husband and, as with Clinton, his responses are typically inconsistent, first refusing to comment or playing down an incident, then having "no recollection", and next  suggesting that he had, at the time, exaggerated the details. His just made apology in response to the new Times article is not dissimilar to Clinton's feigned efforts with the 1992 60 Minutes interview and later in an August 1998 speech to the nation, where he apologized only in vague and general terms.  Schwarzenegger, in fact, did not apologize to any of the women, instead saying most of their allegations are untrue, effectively claiming they're lying.  This can hardly be construed as an apology, but for the purpose of saving his candidacy for governor.

MSN News and others in the United States may have generally missed these stories, but its Australia counterpart in a September 21 report called "Total Recall" accused Schwarzenegger of "almost serial infidelity"   Yahoo News also did a story early this summer, but we had to travel halfway across the world to Yahoo India News to learn "Of Arnie's roving eye and wandering hands" and of his wife's barring of attractive young women from entering areas populated by her husband.

No parallel to Clinton would be complete without the threats to keep silent.  Anna Richardson told a reporter, according to the Enquirer, and now mentioned as one of the LA Time's women on record, that she was told her career would be threatened if she talked about the Terminator's advances; "The implication was, if this story hits the papers I'd be in a lot of trouble, and I was to keep my mouth shut if I wanted to stay in this business."

As with Clinton, the news media prefers to believe the movie star politician's denials rather than do the work of interviewing the affected persons and attempt to determine who is being truthful and who s lying, and as with Clinton, the shear number of incidents, complaints and indisputable television footage should bring any reasonable person to question whether the Republican establishment has decided that winning is more important than everything else.  Add to that, Schwarzenegger's firm belief that lying about sex, even under oath, is perfectly acceptable for a politician having the name Clinton.  If Schwarzenegger wins and becomes the Republican standard-bearer as many California governors often do, the Clinton "legacy" will not only survive but will encompass both major political parties.

What little the US media has reported has been commonly couched in friendly terms such as the New York Post headline "Superstar's Past May Give Ammo to Enemies and Smear Seekers", giving a familiar Clinton-era ring and impression that the mere reporting of these character issues can only come from the crazy liberal-Democrat "Arnold Haters", perhaps there being a vast left-wing conspiracy and "cottage industry" manufacturing the "lies" targeting the "devoted family man".  While we laugh, let us wonder at even the U. S. tabloid newspapers presently closing down all such negative reporting on the Terminator and "peoples' candidate", and at what things money and influence can buy.

California's other gubernatorial candidate Tom McClintock, rather than be the "spoiler" that Republicans are labeling him, may be the savior of Republican and the nation's values, regardless of who, other than Schwarzenegger, wins; that is, if winning isn't everything.
